Boring? Stupid?
I don't know if I like mine or not. I don't know if it is interesting enough. I do like the flow, and how it is visually presented. I was experimenting with sound effects last night, which I think might liven it up a bit... Not sure about the project overall, though! Any comments appreciated.

It's a little long, but that's ok. With some music that ties it all together you should be fine. Maybe add the cover of Charlotte's Web?
ReplyDeleteMaybe have some audio of you saying this? Maybe you could record your side of the conversation or have someone act out the other parts.
I don't think sound effects would help rather than distract.
Perhaps this as a suggestion? It's a free MP3. If you go somber it might be right for your piece.

I love the text message idea--it's actually something I'd thought about doing. I get some outlandish ones and sometimes I just don't understand them. I got one recently from my boss on a trip explaining the history of taxi cabs... weird. A way you might want to spice up the presentation is to speed up the appearance of the text. If you know how to use flash, you could also add that, like on some of the Web sites we've looked at this year. Also a way you could shorten up your presentation is to make the conversations one sided--you could just choose to list only messages that other people sent to you. I think for this project, though, it's perfectly OK to have something a little dry. It is about the every day--and the every day can get pretty mundane. I would say when creating your metatext, you should think about explaining why you chose to present the text messages you did--did you start saving them during a certain time period? Was there any significance there? Also explain why certain words are emphasized. Why do you make certain ones larger? Why do some appear by themselves?
ReplyDeleteI think one thing you could do is make the words fly by a little faster. Some of them are there for a long time. Sound effects would add something to the piece, but I'm not sure what. One think you could try is actually vocally playing the texts either using your own voice, multiple peoples voices, or a text to speech application. I think it's interesting to hear people read texts, because they're normally grammatically and even lexically awkward.
ReplyDeleteAll in all though I think it is a good idea.
Well, this is great. I love the mundanity/everydayness of it, the fragmentation, and the often quite funny and touching quality. I agree with some of the others that adding some simple sound effects would finish it - perhaps typing? perhaps static? perhaps voices, not necessarily reading the text but sort of overheard? Or voices saying something else altogether? See how that works!
ReplyDeleteFunny, I also thought about the exact same sounds... static, typing, voices. I am experimenting with various ones, and I think that sound will really add a new layer to the piece.
